To Clean: Use Manduka Mat Restore or a diluted organic cider vinegar wash (50/50) and a damp cloth or sponge. It is recommended that you DO NOT put the eKO Lite Mat in the washing machine, as it will encourage the material to break down (biodegrade). To Store: Do not leave the mat exposed to excessive amounts of sunlight. If wet, allow the mat to dry before rolling up.
Overview:
The Manduka eKO Lite Mat features proprietary natural closed-cell rubber and comfortable sea-grass texture.
Tri Layer Technology for optimal combination of grip, durability and slip-resistance. Grip & Durability (Top Layer): ‘Sea Grass’ surface texture is naturally grippy; the closed-cell surface keeps out moisture (sweat) from seeping into the mat and breeding bacteria for better durability. Dual Function Cushion (Bottom Layer): Thicker, open-cell bottom layer provides lightweight cushion. It can also be reversed to function as the top surface for more traction. Just flip over for a sweatier practice! Stretch-resistant Scrim (Center): Made from biodegradable cotton and recycled silk blend; Binds top/bottom layer together with heating process, eliminating need for toxic glues.
Sustainability:
Natural & Biodegradable: Made from biodegradable, non-Amazon harvested tree rubber with non-toxic foaming agents and non-AZO dyes.
The eKO Lite Mat will leave no footprint in landfills and is perfect for people who want to make a commitment to our planet.
The eKO Lite Mat is made from sustainably harvested tree rubber. Unlike other rubber mats available today, the foaming agents used to create the eKO Lite are non-toxic. What this means is that no toxic chemicals have gone into the manufacturing process to soften rubber; when the eKO Lite mat is disposed of and biodegrades, it will not leave behind a toxic residue. Additionally, instead of using synthetic polyester for reinforcement, Manduka has chosen to use recycled silk and natural cotton.
Our focus is finding eco friendly alternatives to toxic yoga props.

FAQ; Frequently asked questions about the Manduka eKO Mat
What is the difference between the eKO mat and other eco-friendly yoga mats on the market?
eKO - Durability and Performance Typical rubber eco-yoga mats are generally spongy, due to the process that natural tree rubber goes through to make mats and the foaming agents that are used. Because they are spongy, the durability of the mat is compromised. Also, most eco-yoga mats decompose fairly quickly and become either brittle or overly elastic, especially when exposed to humidity and/or sunlight.
In order to solve these problems, Manduka created the eKO mat with dual layers - each having unique material properties to provide superior durability and the ultimate combination of cushion and grip. The top layer, which is denser and more durable than typical rubber, is engineered as the top side of the mat to provide maximum performance and longevity. The bottom layer, which is less dense and more sponge-like, is engineered as the bottom side of the mat to provide comfort and a layer of cushion and give.
Also, unlike TPE and other petro-based chemical mats, the eKO mat does not have “memory” from being rolled up and will lay completely flat without the corners rolling.
eKO - the Next Generation of Eco-responsible Manufacturing The eKO mat is made from 100% natural, non-Amazon forested tree rubber. Aside from durability and performance, what sets the eKO mat apart is the care taken during the manufacturing process. Unlike typical rubber eco-mats available today, the foaming agents used to create the eKO mat are non-toxic. This means no toxic chemicals have gone into the manufacturing process to make rubber “spongy” therefore when the eKO mat is disposed of and biodegrades, it will leave behind no toxic residue.
How does the eKO mat differ from TPE and other petro-chemical based eco-yoga mats? TPE mats, which are petro-chemical based, tend to wear out quickly contributing inorganic materials to our nation’s landfills. Also, the glue that is used to bond the TPE surfaces is toxic and has an odor that doesn't dissipate. The eKO mat distinguishes itself in its durability, natural materials, and it is scent free after the initial break-in period.
Is the eKO mat really 100% natural? Are any synthetic materials used in its production? The eKO mat is the only rubber mat on the market that is made without any synthetic or toxic materials. We have engineered the mat with a completely natural plasticizer and use recycled silk and cotton as reinforcement (most mats use polyester for reinforcement and a toxic foaming agent to process the rubber).
Does the eKO mat oxidize like other rubber mats on the market? Oxidation (or changes in color) is a natural byproduct of all natural products which are designed to decompose. By storing your eKO mat in a dry environment out of sunlight you can ensure a long life of use. To remove any film or discoloration on the surface of your mat caused by the oxidation process, use a light scrub with a solution of 50/50 organic cider vinegar and water, or Manduka’s Mat Restore (a vinegar based solution) followed by a rinse of clear water and an air dry. DO NOT PUT YOUR MAT IN A WASHING MACHINE! Over time, the color changes that occur naturally both from practice and oxidation give each eKO mat its own individual personality.
I sweat a lot! Is the eKO mat for me? Due to the unique properties of the eKO mat’s surface texture, it provides slip resistance with light to medium perspiration
Do eKO mats smell? Other rubber yoga mats all seem to smell. Due to the properties of natural rubber, all rubber mats have a certain smell. However, Manduka’s eKO mat has been engineered so that the initial scent fades over time with use. The smell will dissipate within 2-3 weeks, or sooner if you leave your mat unrolled when storing. To speed up this process, you can also wipe the mat down with a solution of 50/50 organic cider vinegar and water or Manduka’s Mat Restore (a vinegar based solution). It is important to note that the smell is natural and not a result of off-gassing from toxic chemicals.
Will the eKO mat wear out if used on a carpet? The eKO mat has been designed to provide the ultimate in durability for a natural rubber mat. Its durability is superior to any other rubber mat on the market . The eKO mat will not wear out more quickly if used on carpet. With proper care, including storing the mat away from sunlight and moisture, the eKO mat is built to last.
What about latex allergies with rubber mats? Through Manduka's manufacturing process, the eKO mat is 99% latex free, and safe to use for people with latex sensitivities. However, if you know you are sensitive to even traces of latex then the eKO mat probably won’t be the right one for you.
